Sligo Youth Information Centre invited Ukrainian and Sligo & Leitrim young people to our Community Integration Adventure Camps during the month of July. Through the Adventure Camp, young people from both communities had the opportunity to come together, learn some new outdoor based skills and meet some new people along the way!
For our Leitrim camp, organised with Northwest Adventure Tours, the young people started off with some biking and orienteering around our centre in Ballinamore. On the second day of this camp, the group hiked Tullylacken, a lovely scenic looped walk on the foothills of Sliabh an Iarainn. The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of these teenagers and two great days were had.
For our Sligo camp, we had a 3 day event, again in partnership with Northwest Adventure Tours. The group spent the day scouring the grounds of Cleaveragh Sports Complex, learning how to orienteer and complete various orienteering challenges. The competition was high! On day two we went up Carins Hill for a lovely hill walk and a spot of yoga in the sun at the top. Then a bit of bushcrafting with Barry from Northwest Adventure Tours and building our own fire to toast some marshmallows and relax with a cup of hot chocolate! On day 3 the sun broke through the rain just in time for our hike up and over Knocknarea to see the stunning views at the top and learn about the folklore of Queen Maeve’s Grave at the top. Then back to the Riverside Hotel for food, ice-cream and a well deserved rest after all our activities over the three days!
